The delivery of world leading science depends on the processing, storage and sharing of data in accordance with the FAIR principles. NERC has developed and continues to invest in the British Oceanographic Data Centre as a national capability for marine data sharing and preservation. Today, advances in ocean observing technologies are delivering new and vastly expanded data sets. The FMRI programme is examining how investments in new digital infrastructure and AI technologies can maximise the impact of NERC's observing capabilities, creating new opportunities for broad, multi-disciplinary research collaborations and breaking down existing barriers to inclusion.

Workstream Objectives

During the business case development phase, the objectives of the FMRI Digital Infrastructure workstream are to:

  • Understand the unique requirements of the digital research infrastructure required for marine science.
  • Identify the dependencies on and opportunities for alignment with other digital initiatives.

The rapid advancement of AI technology is reshaping how we observe, understand, and forecast changes in our oceans. Integrating AI into the FMRI program will empower researchers to unravel complex physical and biological processes, open new avenues for innovative technological solutions, and support the preservation and enhancement of ocean health for generations to come.
