The governance for FMRI is based on the Managing Successful Programmes (MSP 5th Edition) framework and is aligned to the Government Project Delivery Functional Standard.

The NERC Management Board provides corporate sponsorship for the FMRI Programme. It is informed by the FMRI Board chaired by the NERC Director of Strategic Partnerships. The FMRI Board provides strategic oversight for the development of the business case and options selection. The FMRI Board is advised on the science case by an independent Science Advisory Group and on the costs of possible operating models by the Future Operating Models Working Group.

My priority is maintaining a constant focus on efficacy, efficiency and governance to ensure that the future research infrastructure is delivered on time and to budget, and that the programme upholds The Seven Principles of Public Life at all levels.

Dr. Kristian Thaller, Programme Director

The Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) owns the business case and is accountable for the successful delivery of the programme. They head the Programme Leadership Team. The Leadership Team also includes the:

  • Programme Director who is responsible for day-to-day management and decision making, and for managing the relationships required to successfully scope and execute the activity of the programme.
  • Business Case Manager who leads the planning, production and delivery of the FMRI business case on behalf of the SRO.
  • Lead Scientist who fronts engagement with national and international science and policy stakeholders.

A Delivery Board supports the SRO by providing oversight and assurance for delivery activities.
